Bert Blackwell, M.D., is the Medical
Director for the Shepherd Pain Institute.
Dr. Blackwell completed his residency
for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
in San Antonio, Texas. After residency,
he completed a one-year Anesthesiology
fellowship in Pain Medicine.
Dr.Blackwell is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine.
Prior to joining Shepherd Center, Dr. Blackwell served as Medical Director of the Pain Division at East Jefferson General Hospital in New Orleans.
He has had a long-standing interest in relieving pain and has a particular interest in cancer pain. Dr. Blackwell is an active member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the International Spine Injection Society, and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is active in research and has written and illustrated several book chapters and articles on the management of pain. Dr. Blackwell uses a multidisciplinary holistic approach and will offer modalities to include physical therapy, biofeedback, acupuncture, and counseling as well as the traditional approaches of medications and interventional procedures like epidural steroid and other spinal injections.
Dr. Blackwell's clinical skills are reflected in his strong resume and his compassion for patients and his commitment to the treatment of acute and chronic pain. He was one of the founding members of the Palliative Care Team at his former hospital and has volunteered his services to Hospices.
