Issues in DiversityNursing Guide for Cultural-Specific Care As medical professionals, Shepherd Center knows that our patients come from diverse backgrounds and have varying expectations and capabilities. We know that culture, race and ethnicity are strong determinants in a person’s perception of health and illness. Our goal is to provide optimal care for all patients we serve. In order to do this, it is important that nurses develop cultural insight and understanding to respect the rights of culturally diverse individuals. Our nurses take pride in being patient advocates. Recognizing cultural diversity, along with integrating knowledge, enables our nurses to be more effective in serving patients. No matter from what culture, race or ethnic group a patient may come from, Shepherd nurses treat each patient as an individual and listens carefully to the patient and their family members.Although cultural generalizations are helpful to know, they never replace asking the patient questions in order to give culturally competent care.
