Frequently Asked Questions for New Nurses

Where should I report for my first day?

The first day of any employee’s orientation will take place in the Educational Conference Rooms located on the 6th Floor of the Woodruff-Marcus Building. Please be present and seated at 7:30 a.m. Expect to be with us for eight hours that day.

When does orientation specific to nursing begin?

Your second and third days of orientation will be classroom time spent with our nurse educators and will cover information unique to our patient population of spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury and other neuromuscular diseases and disorders. Unless otherwise noted, please report to the same class room as the first day and at the same time of 7:30 a.m. Expect to be with us for 8 hours each day.

What happens after the three days of classroom orientation?

Your schedule will be completed by your Unit Manager and is typically forwarded to you prior to your first day. If not, we will see that you are in touch with your Nurse Manager before the end of class.

What should I wear to orientation?

Business casual or scrubs are appropriate for day one. As days two and three concentrate on clinical practice, please dress in scrubs. At present, you may wear any color or style as long as your present yourself professionally. Please avoid scrubs that are too tight or too large, have logos, product endorsements or slogans.

Where should I park for orientation?

Until directed otherwise, you will park in our parking deck.

Is there a cafeteria on campus?

Yes. The cafeteria is located in the basement of the Shepherd Building and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday - Friday. Shepherd Center will provide breakfast and lunch to all attendees on Monday of orientation.
