ATLANTA - (July 11, 2008) - Shepherd Center has been named one of the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation in a U.S. News & World Report survey. The ranking appears in the annual edition of “America’s Best Hospitals,” which hits newsstands July 14.
Shepherd Center ranked No. 9 among 25 hospitals that earned a spot in the magazine’s survey of rehabilitation hospitals, which is the highest ranking Shepherd Center has received since first appearing in the survey in 2000. Last year Shepherd Center ranked No. 11.
Shepherd Center also held the distinction of being the only rehabilitation hospital in the Southeast that is listed in the top 25.
“We are honored to rank among the top rehabilitation hospitals in the country and especially proud to be the highest ranked rehabilitation hospital in the Southeast,” said Gary Ulicny, Ph.D., president and CEO of Shepherd Center. “Being included for the ninth year in a row shows that our peers are recognizing the specialty care we offer to individuals who’ve experienced a catastrophic injury or illness.”
The standards for ranking in the “Best Hospitals” survey are rigorous. Rankings for rehabilitation hospitals are based on reputation among board-certified specialists. The specialists are asked to name five hospitals they consider the best in their specialty, regardless of location or expense. U.S. News has published “America’s Best Hospitals” annually for 19 years, ranking centers in a number of specialties.
"“The America’s Best Hospitals rankings provide readers with trusted material during some of life’s most concerning times – hospitalization,” said Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News & World Report. “Our rankings highlight the internal culture of excellence embraced by caregivers in the great hospitals throughout the U.S.”
“Talent and money alone don’t put hospitals in the rankings,” agreed Best Hospitals editor Avery Comarow. “The truly best hospitals are never satisfied,” he said. “Of course they have high medical standards. But the emphasis is not only on doing well, but always doing better – squeezing another few percentage points out of the infection rate, improving the quality of life of elderly patients besides helping more of them survive.”
Authoritative and influential, the 2008 America’s Best Hospitals guide ranks 170 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties – with full data available online for another 1,500 that are unranked. In addition, the Honor Roll singles out the “best of the best.” Rankings tables are available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals.
