Shepherd Center President and CEO Gary Ulicny Elected to Georgia Hospital Association Board of Trustees

ATLANTA - (Feb. 9, 2009) - Gary Ulicny, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Shepherd Center, was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) at the association’s annual convention Feb. 3 in Atlanta.

Ulicny has several years of leadership experience in rehabilitation services. Since 1994, he has served as president and CEO of Shepherd Center, a 120-bed hospital that specializes in the treatment of people with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and other neuromuscular disorders. Ulicny is responsible for the overall administration of the center, in addition to ancillary functions such as marketing, development and community relations.

During his tenure, the facility has, since 2000, been ranked in US News & World Report as one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the nation. It has received the Edward Loveland Award for Distinguished Contributions in Healthcare by the American College of Physicians, was selected as the Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals, and was named one of Atlanta’s Best Employers by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Atlanta magazine.

Prior to joining Shepherd Center, Ulicny was administrative director for rehabilitation services at The WakeMed Hospital System in Raleigh, N.C. He also served as the regional vice president for the Learning Services Corporation in New Hampshire before serving as the company’s executive director. Ulicny has served on the National Behavioral Task Force of the National Head Injury Foundation since 1989. He is currently vice president of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and is chairman of the GHA Rehabilitation Council. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
