Shepherd Center provides an interdisciplinary-team approach to deliver a comprehensive recovery program for people with Transverse Myelitis. Our medical team's ultimate goal is to help patients return to a fully functional, independent life.

Our inpatient treatment plan will include occupational and physical therapy (including strengthening, stretching, balance and mat exercises); medications to treat the underlying cause (which could be infection, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or another disease); medications for pain, muscle spasms and inflammation; and counseling for bowel and bladder management, maintenance of skin integrity and activities of daily living.

A small percentage of people suffer from recurring bouts of transverse myelitis, especially when there is an underlying illness that causes the patient's own immune system to attack the spinal cord, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage.
