Brain Injury Family Education Classes 

Our family education opportunities are for families and caregivers with loved ones in our inpatient brain injury program. Your case manager will help guide you to the classes, groups and training that are appropriate for you and your loved one.

New Family Orientation Course

Meeting with the Program Director, Susan Johnson, to review "what to expect" from your stay here at Shepherd.

Where: ABI-S Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building)

When: Wednesdays 11am—12 noon

Disorders of Consciousness Education Class

Designed for the families of patients who are in our DOC Program. This class is an educational opportunity conducted by one of our neuropsychologists that reviews anatomy of the brain and what can happen when brain injury occurs. Strongly encouraged to attend as often as you like.

Where: ABI-MW Conference Room A  (2nd Floor, Marcus-Woodruff Building)

When: Mondays 10am - 11am

Brain Injury Rehabilitation Education Course

Designed for the families of patients that are at the Rehabilitation Level of Care. This class is an educational opportunity conducted by one of our neuropsychologists that reviews anatomy of the brain and what can happen when brain injury occurs. Strongly encouraged to attend as often as you like.

When: Fridays 1pm - 3pm

Stroke Education Class

Educational opportunity for patients and families that is specifically focused on Wellness and Stroke Awareness information. Strongly encouraged to attend as many times as you like if applicable to your situation.

Where: ABI-S Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building)

When: Tuesdays 2 – 3pm

You’re at Shepherd, What’s Next?

Presented by a member of the therapy manager team to review ins and outs of the rehab process, give resource information, and help answer general questions about your next steps. Strongly encouraged to attend as many times as you like.

Where: ABI-S Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building)

When: Fridays 11am – 12pm

Peer and Caregiver Support Group

A chance for current families and patients to visit with past Shepherd patients and families. Strongly encouraged to attend as many times as you like.

Where: Woodruff Plaza- Sundays 

When: Woodruff Plaza –Sundays 3pm – 4pm

Class WILL NOT be held on Sunday, October 8.

Family Support Group

Led by our Family Counselor, this is a chance for families to come together as a group for networking and support. Strongly encouraged to attend as many times as you like.

Where: ABI-S Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building) and ABI-MW Conference Room B (2nd Floor, Marcus-Woodruff Building)

When: ABI-S Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building) – Tuesdays 3 – 4pm, ABI-MW Conference Room (2nd Floor, Shepherd Building) – Thursdays 3 – 4pm

Family Medical Conference

Your case manager will schedule a one-time conference with your loved one’s attending physician. The physician will review your loved one’s injury, discuss discharge plans, and answer any medical-related questions that you have (please be sure to write down questions ahead of time). Please notify your case manager if you cannot attend so the meeting can occur via teleconference for you and/or any other family members that you would like.

Family Team Conference

If needed, your case manager will schedule a family team conference to give you an opportunity to share your concerns and needs with your therapy team as well as to receive an update on the progress of your family member.

Hands-on Training

Hands-on training will be provided on an ongoing basis, as determined by the needs of the patient and family to promote the care and safety of your loved one. Prior to discharge, the family will be asked to come and spend 1 or more days with the therapy and nursing staff and participate in the care of the patient from 7:30am until 3pm. The case manager will schedule this training for the family. Please limit the number of family members to 3.

TLA – Transitional Living Apartment

If needed prior to discharge, your case manager will schedule a stay in our transitional living apartment (TLA). This gives the family an opportunity to spend the night with the patient in a home-like environment, providing total care of the patient (evening and morning routine) with the support of the staff if needed.
