Shatavia Alexander Thomas, DMFT, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She was born and raised in Atlanta and received her BS in Psychology and MS in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University.

She earned her Doctorate of Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT) from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She has worked in the mental health field for 20 years and in higher education for 10 years. Shay initially joined the Shepherd Center as the ABI Family Therapist in January 2020, offering therapy to family members of patients recovering from stroke and brain injury and facilitating inpatient family adjustment groups. She returned in January 2023, to serve in the Outpatient Department, working with patients and families diagnosed with spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. Trained in family systems, her strengths-based style involves offering hope, maximizing resources, infusing creativity, and exploring the impact of language, cultural factors, and relationships. Shay also maintains a small private practice.

Outside of work, she enjoys writing poetry, listening to music, exercising, being in nature, and traveling with family (husband and son) and friends.
