Our Health and Wellness Clinics are for individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities. These clinics provide the opportunity to become physically active and gain insight to achieving a well-balanced lifestyle.

2023 Recreation Therapy Yearly Program Events


Online Programming

    Seated Yoga

    This six-week online course meets on Thursdays with Shepherd Center Certified Yoga instructors. This course will focus on seated yoga and increase your knowledge and skills in yoga. The course runs from April 6th May 11th

    • Date: April 6th – May 11th on Thursdays (6 sessions)
    • Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Location: Online Virtual Platform
    • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt. Instruction, and equipment)

    Self-Defense

    This six-week online course meets one day a week with a trained martial artist and Defence Lab Instructor. This course will focus on learning the skill set to push with confidence and tools to defend yourself during a confrontation. The course runs from June 6th  July 18th.

    • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

    In-Person Programming

    Tennis Clinic

    This tennis clinic will be with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapists and local disabled tennis athletes/instructors. This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations. The clinic will be held at Lost Mountain Tennis Center in Powder Springs, GA.

    • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

    • Cost: FREE

      Birding Clinic

      This event offers a guided birding adventure at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens with Shepherd Center and The Georgia Audubon Society. This guided tour will increase your knowledge of birding, community mobility, and camaraderie with other birders.

      • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
      • Location: The Atlanta Botanical Gardens
      • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt, facility usage, and lunch)

      Day Fishing Trip

      Participants will have an opportunity to get out of the city and onto the water for a day fishing trip in Helen, GA. Fishermen will have access to a guided fly-fishing experience on a private creek. Limited spots are available. Contact Outdoor Specialist Gavin McClintock at 404-350-7790 for more details.

      Tennis Clinic

      This tennis clinic will be with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapists and local disabled tennis athletes/instructors. This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations. The clinic will be held at Blackburn Tennis Center in Atlanta, GA.

      • Cost: FREE

      Golf Clinic

      This golf clinic will be with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapists and Georgia State Golf Association. This course offers education and hands-on demonstrations.  The event will be held at Bobby Jones Golf Course.

      • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt, facility usage, and equipment)

      Adventure Skills Workshop (ASW)

      During this three-day camp, you will have the opportunity to participate in several outdoor activities while focusing on outdoor skills such as kayaking, tubing, jet skiing, and so much more! This camp offers education and hands-on demonstrations. Adventure Skills Workshop is held at Camp ASCCA, a wheelchair-accessible facility in Jackson’s Gap, Alabama. Includes meals, lodging, and instruction.

      • Date: May 19th 21st   
      • Location: Camp ASCCA in Jackson’s Gap, AL
      • Cost: Participant: $225 (includes t-shirt, lodging, meals, activities, and instruction)/Attendant: $205 (includes t-shirt, lodging, and meals)

      Climbing Clinic

      This event will take place in Chattanooga, TN, in collaboration with The Kelly Brush Foundation.  This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations for adaptive climbing.

      • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
      • Location: High Point Climbing and Fitness in Downtown Chattanooga
      • Cost: FREE

      Waterski Clinic

      This event will take place at Lake Allatoona in Acworth, GA. This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations of adaptive water skiing.

      • Location: Lake Allatoona in Acworth, GA
      • Cost: $30 (includes instruction and equipment use)

      Horticulture Clinic 

      This is a horticulture clinic at the Trellis Ability Garden located at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center with Shepherd Center and Trellis Horticulture Therapy Alliance. This program will focus on a basic horticulture/nature craft session. The session topic will be determined closer to the date.

      • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
      • Location: The Ability Garden at Callanwolde in Atlanta, GA 
      • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt, facility usage, snacks, and equipment) 

      Registration

      Registration is required for all events and opens six weeks prior to the start of the class or course. Most courses require a small fee; however, financial assistance is available.
