Our Health and Wellness Clinics are for individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities. These clinics provide the opportunity to become physically active and gain insight to achieving a well-balanced lifestyle.

2023 Recreation Therapy Yearly Program Events


Online Programming

E-Birding Clinic

This is an online educational bird-watching series with Shepherd Center and the Georgia Audubon Society. This program includes three educational lectures. Session topics will be determined closer to the date.

  • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Location: Online Virtual Platform
  • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt and equipment)

Shepherd Center Moves

This six-week course meets twice weekly on a virtual platform for cardio and strength training with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapist and Exercise Physiologist. 

  • Date: January 17th through February 23rd on Tuesdays and Thursdays (12 sessions)
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: Online Virtual Platform
  • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt and equipment)

Leisure Skill - Art

This program, led by Shepherd Center staff, may use acrylic or watercolor paints, soft pastels, oil pastels, and other art materials in mindful exercises and artmaking. Activity will be determined closer to the program date.

In-Person Programming

Video Game Clinic

This video game clinic will be with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapists and Contender eSports Gaming. This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations. This clinic will take place at Contender eSports Gaming Center in Smyrna, GA.

  • Time: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Location: Contender eSports Gaming Center in Smyrna, GA
  • Cost: FREE

Health and Wellness Expo

This event will take place at Shepherd Center in collaboration with the Atlanta Tri Club. Various local vendors will also be present for this event. Participants will have the opportunity to receive information and attend educational sessions regarding Nutrition and Wellness, general adaptive sports options, and potential funding sources for leisure and recreation equipment. Participants will also be given the opportunity to trial and use various adaptive sports wheelchairs and equipment.

  • Location: Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA
  • Cost: FREE

Horticulture Clinic

This is a horticulture clinic at the Trellis Ability Garden located at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center with Shepherd Center and Trellis Horticulture Therapy Alliance. This program will focus on a basic horticulture/nature craft session. The session topic will be determined closer to the date.

  • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: The Ability Garden at Callanwolde in Atlanta, GA
  • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt, facility usage, snacks, and equipment)

Fencing Clinic                                                                                

This fencing clinic will be with Shepherd Center Recreation Therapist, Shepherd Center Sports Team Coordinator, and local disabled fencing athletes/instructors. This course offers educational and hands-on demonstrations.

  • Time: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Location: Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA
  • Cost: $30 (includes t-shirt, facility usage, snacks, and equipment) 

Leisure Skill Clinic in Charlotte, NC

This event will take place in Charlotte, NC in collaboration with Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (ASAP) and Back to Independence Rehab. Participants will have the opportunity to attend educational sessions regarding Nutrition and Wellness, general adaptive sports options, and potential funding sources for leisure and recreation equipment. Participants will also be given the opportunity to trial and use various adaptive sports wheelchairs and equipment.

  • Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Location: Back to Independence Rehab in Charlotte, NC
  • Cost: FREE

Registration

Registration is required for all events and opens six weeks prior to the start of the class or course. Most courses require a small fee; however, financial assistance is available.
