Sports Concussion Management

Sports-related concussion care from specialists who treat prolonged concussion symptoms in athletes

Shepherd Center has a long history of supporting professional, collegiate, and youth sports teams. However, our scope is not limited to treating athletes in formally organized sports. We pride ourselves on working with a wide variety of people from all performance levels, ranging from amateur sports organizations and summer leagues to dance and cheerleading.

We strive to return patients to their full activity and performance level as quickly and as safely as possible through evidence-based, individualized interventions. Our interdisciplinary team of specialists consults with families, coaches, athletic trainers, and school officials early in the healing process to ensure the best outcome for every patient so they can return to pre-injury activities safely.

Concussion Assessment

Concussions are a potential danger in any sport or activity. You keep athletes safe by ensuring they receive proper care and management for their concussions. If you suspect an athlete has a concussion, err on the side of caution, and immediately remove them from play. The athlete should be evaluated by a physician right away who will confirm their concussion diagnosis, aid in their recovery, and get them back to sports safely.

For most athletes, their concussion symptoms will resolve in two weeks. Prolonged or worsening symptoms after two weeks indicate they are experiencing a complex concussion. Complex concussions can be medically challenging but with an interdisciplinary team of concussion specialists, athletes can fully recover

Patient Testimonial

The amount of time and attention to subtle signs and symptoms was impressive. They were able to bridge the gap between where I was and what they know to take me further toward recovery.
