Multiple Sclerosis Support, Wellness, and Education

Our empowering approach to physical and psychosocial health and wellbeing

The Eula C. and Andrew C. Carlos Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation and Wellness Program at Shepherd Center is a dedicated program for the rehabilitative treatment and wellness of patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and related conditions. Created in 2013, the program was one of the first in the nation to integrate all aspects of wellness — fitness, nutrition, and education — into a single approach tailored specifically for people with MS.

Under the guidance of an exercise psychologist, the comprehensive membership program teaches participants to learn to manage their health, improve day-to-day function, and gain physical and psychosocial strength while decreasing the effects of deconditioning.

Exercise and Mobility Classes

MS Wellness Program membership grants access to a gym with exercise equipment, Shepherd Center's temperature-controlled pool, and specialized group fitness classes. These classes cover core strengthening, cardio, yoga, aquatics, Pilates, agility, and coordination, ensuring personalized monitoring by instructors. Accommodations for heat-related symptoms, like fans, ice vests, and cooler pool temperatures, are provided.

Educational Classes

Educational classes are offered on a rolling schedule, providing access to up-to-date and trustworthy information. These classes focus on various topics, including symptom management, energy conservation, community resources, nutrition, and more. The classes also focus on MS research, allowing you to work with our MS Research Director and be an active part of the change you want to see in the world of MS.

Member Testimonial

When I first learned I had MS, I thought there was no way I could bowl. At the MS Wellness Program at Shepherd Center, they encouraged me to start with a lightweight ball and worked on my strength with me using two- and three-pound weights in a wellness class. I gradually got stronger and now bowl with my own personalized eight-pound ball!

Social Activities

Establishing peer support is an important aspect of living with MS. Our Wellness Program places a strong emphasis on bringing people together through social activities. This can include games, arts and crafts, as well as community outings.

Community Outings

The Wellness Program offers outings outside Shepherd Center's walls to enhance members' integration into the community. This enables our members to participate in activities they may not have the opportunity to do or are hesitant to do independently. Additionally, these outings may occur in a group or individually. The group setting allows the members to socialize and share their MS experience.
